  • Hotel Des Arts: Ray Noland - GOT NEXT, General Election Tour 08.

Review by Jennifer Jeffrey: In 2006, inspired by upstart Senator Barack Obama, Ray Noland began creating what has grown to a vast body of Obama artwork, from paintings to photographs to posters. A few months ago, he decided to take the show on the road, and San Francisco is just one of many stops. Noland's posters have a near-official flavor to them, popping with crisp, presidential blue and red. Viewed together, they feel like a glimpse into the campaign trail-- Obama's shining visage looks up at a basketball hoop, towers above a microphone stand, beams into a crowd. Is he The One? Ray Noland seems to think so. My favorite piece is a small painting of Michelle Obama in a swishy skirt. The crowd is upbeat and smiley, but no one talks politics.

Comment by AB: It's the onset of Obama-mania in artland. When election time rolls around, artists are usually against somebody, not for anybody. This election, they're for somebody, namely Barack Obama, in a huge way-- and they got the art to prove it. The art here is mainly posters and original screenprint/paintings by Chicago artist Ray Noland, and it's mainly excellent (there's also a smattering of Shepard Fairey prints). Posters and T-shirts are available for sale. Buy now and support salvation.

Consulate General of Mexico: Jaime Guerrero - Modern Antiquities / Antiguedades Modernas.

Comment by AB: First off, props to the Consulate General of Mexico for their support of the arts in general, and our local artist community in particular. This time around, Jaime Guerrero, via the medium of glass, creatively connects the dots between Precolumbian antiquities and Mexican wrestling masks. Plus he offers a variety of additional glass pieces for our appreciation and enjoyment. Good work; fun show.

Adobe Books and Backroom Gallery: one of these does not belong. Curated by the folks & Sonya Derman.

Comment by AB: Modest group exhibition of art by artists of Creativity Explored. I can't figure out which one doesn't belong (unless it's me).

Comment by AB: Group show of art about that increasingly enticing gasless travel option-- bicycles. And it's pretty good stuff too. Recommended viewing for dedicated pedalers. But out front is the real show-- a superb trick cyclist doing everything from handstands on handlebars to riding backwards on one wheel. Woah!
