Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi: Holiday Art Party.

Comment: It's a holiday art party, alright. Supervisor Mirkarimi's office is so packed, it's almost impossible to move. Yes, the atmosphere is festive, but on a more somber note, we have the art-- a selection of international editorial cartoons that illustrate why so many people in so many other countries hate us is on display alongside contorted cartoon character depictions by David Faulk referencing how we struggle with various aspects of our lives, both inner and outer.

Comment: The Luggage Store, one of San Francisco's most venerable non-profit multidisciplinary arts institutions, turns 20 and tonight they celebrate that milestone at two locations, this one being The Luggage Store Annex (we'll visit The Luggage Store proper in a bit). Perhaps one of the best ways to gauge the respect and reverence that artists have for a particular gallery is by the quality of work they submit for a show like this-- one that's not so much about them, but rather about Laurie Lazer, Darryl Smith, and everyone else who has contributed to making The Luggage Store Gallery what it is today.

Jack Hanley Gallery: Gee Vaucher - Introspective.

Comment: A more than thirty-year bigtime retrospective of paintings, drawings, sculptures, collages, and mixed media works by British activist artist Gee Vaucher. Her involvement with British punk band Crass in the 1980's (they still all live together) is intimately intertwined with her unique brand of anarchic protest art. Of particular marvel are her intense sociopolitical collages. Jack Hanley tells me much of the work on exhibit has never before been offered for sale. If you like your art impactful, you'll find no shortage of that here. Excellent show; go see.

Fort Gallery: Ryan Coffey - Through the Dark of the Night.

Comment: Yet another grand opening of yet another peppy new art gallery in San Francisco, this one located on an obscure alley called Wiese off 16th Street between Mission and Valencia, opposite the Bart Station (I'm giving the precise location 'cuz it's not that easy to find). Anyway, Fort Gallery's debut event offers up a curiously engaging array of atypical collage, mixed media works, sculpture, and assemblage by Ryan Coffey.

Mission 17 Gallery: I.O.U.

Artists: Renee Gertler, Laura Boles Faw, Marshall Marice, Phillip Hua, Samantha Lautman, Carrie Hott, Kathryn Dunlevie, Chris Dorosz, David Yun, Caetlynn J. Booth, Eric Larson, Seth Lower, Niki Shapiro, Dana Hemenway, Kathryn Kenworth, Joshua Short, G. Cole Allee, Ricardo Anibal, Sean Fletcher and Isabel Reichert, Marco Flavio Marinucci, Kimberlee Koym-Murteira, Gordon Winiemko.

Comment: The art at Mission 17's fourth annual juried exhibition purports to revolve around the debts we owe others, but often renders me baffled, or at best, indifferent. Maybe it's the chaotic slapdash way the show's laid out. Or maybe it's one of those kinda deals where you really gotta want it. In other words, you have to sit down with each work of art and cherish and pore over it for extended periods of time (a commodity which I unfortunately ain't got) in order to appreciate its essence. But doesn't the best art tend to brand your brain instantly? Whether you get it or not, whether you delve into it or not, whether you read between the lines or not, you know you're in the presence of momentousness, which, sorry to say, you aren't here.

Artists: Bert Bergen, Cori Crowley, Wendy Farina, Veronica de Jesus, Jarrett Mitchell, Kurt Keppeler, John O'Malley, Michael McConnell, Jesse Hayward, Curtis Jones, Leah Martin, Johanna Capelle, John Eames, Crockett Bodelson, George Drew, Kottie Paloma, Mary Elizabeth Yarbrough, Archie McKay, Margaret Tedesco (performance 8-9pm), Jenn Poppin, Brion Nuda Rosch, Andrew Tosiello, Craig Atkins, Christine Shields, Eric Landmark, Regina Clarkinia, Andy Ristiano, Alexander Theodoropulos, Liz Walsh, Dale Hoyt, Jeff Ray, Katrina Lamb, Owen Connell, Lettie Jane Rennekamp, Nickolas Mohanna, more.

Comment: Art about the formerly almighty dollar. Sad but oh so true-- it's beginning to look more like a peso. Why? 'Cuz we'd rather spend them than save them, for one thing. Hey-- check out my Parisian friend Serghei Manoliu's dollar art.

Ping Pong Gallery: Kirk Stoller - Between Dimensions.

Comment: Kirk Stoller tells me the show was originally about painting, but lacked traction in that regard, so he abandoned the brush, piled stuff up instead and in so doing, explores the exigencies of proximity. I'm a mite unclear on the payoff; for that, you'll have to ask Stoller.

Comment: Twentieth anniversary of The Luggage Store Gallery continued-- this time at the gallery proper, the main event, the Oz of the instant, 1007 Market Street at Sixth Street. Yes, dear readers, the scene is dense with dignitaries, notables, luminaries, veterans, neophytes, contenders, hopefuls, highbrows, rapscallions, fluff puppies, blowfishes, and me, all honoring the eminence of the Luggage Store epic. Be there or be square.

Gallery Three: Greg Gossel - Ignorance and Bliss.

Comment: It's perhaps an homage to Roy Lichtenstein, but as Greg Gossel explains his technique, he appears to advance the envelope by skillfully manipulating silkscreen, torn paper stencils, and paint to create illusions of ripped neglected billboard-style signage.
