Hashimoto Contemporary: Mario Wagner - A Glow that Transfers Creativity.

Comment by AB: Mario Wagner begins with magazine cutouts and then through various means of alteration transforms them into video, collage, light installations, fabric patterns, and surreal color field interpretations of ordinary every day events. Go check it out.

Spoke Art Gallery: Serge Gay Jr. - GOLD.

Comment by AB: Serge Gay Jr. homages several generations of music and recording artists including The Beatles, Michael Jackson and Madonna in ingenious and electrifying ways. This dude is album covers waiting to happen. Worth a visit.

Eleanor Harwood Gallery: Kirk Maxson - Foraging; Alexis Anne Mackenzie.

Comment by AB: This show's all about mastery of medium. Kirk Maxson transforms the front gallery with elaborate paper and brass foil leaf, floral and butterfly swarm installations. Complex arrangements and remarkable detail will reel you right in. In the rear gallery, continuing with the floral theme, Alexis Anne Mackenzie creates some of the most intricate and precise small-format cut paper collages I've seen in quite some time. Stop on by; it's all good here.

But wait; there's editorial comment too. To quote from the show statement, "These days almost all artists approaching the gallery have been through MFA programs and are gunning for a serious stake in the arts game. While nothing is wrong with this, it is a far cry from the days of the cheap-living outsider artist. What feels so refreshing about this show is that both artists are making beautiful art without the self-consciousness so often permeating the contemporary art world." Nicely put. It's about time someone stands up for good old fashioned unpretentious art and lays a bit of a diss on today's art world insanity.

[ 2nd Floor Projects ]: Candles to the Sun - Heidi Anderson & Evan Ellsworth Jourdan.

Comment by AB: Intense florescent fantasies in acrylics on canvas by Evan Ellsworth Jourdan that might easily be mistaken for screen prints, are offset by Heidi Anderson's earthy sculptural and mixed-media works that are influenced by Southwest Native American motifs.
