Haines Gallery: Darren Waterston - Ravens and Ruins.

Comment by AB: Mysterious cosmic abstract paintings tinged with ominous overtones are contrasted against impeccably precise realistic silhouette groupings of birds, plants and animals. Loose works on paper, neatly displayed in a glass case at the center of the gallery, might be considered as points of reference for the rest of the show, and work towards resolving any apparent disparities.

Stephen Wirtz Gallery: Michael Jang - The Jangs.

Review by Kathryn Arnold: Michael Jang's vintage photos of casual family activities give amazing insights to his Chinese-American upbringing. Upon viewing, I feel like I am looking in on someone's private life and not sure if I should be there. These works are tied into San Francisco photography traditions with their sense of the everyday, and of spontaneous moments.

Comment by AB: Michael Jang shares his personal photographic journal (and journey). Good show; stop on by.

Toomey Tourell Fine Art: Jerrold Burchman - New Paintings & Collages.

Comment by AB: According to the preamble, Jerrold Burchman has been at this art game for fifty years now, and these recent artworks celebrate that. They have a clean contemporary feel, at times perhaps harking back to the design sensibilities and aesthetics of mid-century modern.

Scott Nichols Gallery: Portraits of Famous People.

Comment by AB: The gallery's website doesn't appear to have been updated in a while, so I'm just guessing at the show's title. Regardless, it's an apt description of what hangs on the walls. Notables from all walks of life as seen through the lenses of some of the world's great photographers.

Corden Potts Gallery: Los Toros and Mountain Ranch - Michael Crouser.

Comment by AB: Michael Crouser has photographed over 150 bullfights over the past fifteen years in both Europe and South America, and here presents a select sampling of that. He also shows examples of his work documenting the vanishing cattle ranches of the Colorado Rockies. A romantic, nostalgic, yet timeless perspective on both.

The McLoughlin Gallery: Struggle for Perspective - ESK and MoE.

Comment by AB: Work by two Oakland artists, ESK and MoE. MoE's sculptures involve upholstery techniques as he transits realms ranging from cosmic to ominous. Wall-hung assemblages by ESK, structured around diagonal axes, are comprised of scrap wood and painted polygons; his works on paper incorporate similar elements.
