Modernism Gallery: Damian Elwes - Artist Studios, From Picasso to Jeff Koons; Shawn Huckins - Everything is Hilarious and Nothing is Real.

Comment by AB: In the front gallery, Damian Elwes paints faithful yet romantic representations of famous artists' studios. In the rear gallery, Shawn Huckins overlays and underlays iconic American paintings with humorous editorial snippets of SMS (the abbreviated language of texting). Good show on both counts; definitely recommended.

Hashimoto Contemporary: Joel Daniel Phillips - Belongings.

Comment by AB: Heroic full-length graphite portraits of street people are each paired with a drawing of a single significant personal possession on the same sized paper, isolated in a way that compels us to reflect on the meanings of materialism. Also on view are four small drawings of similar individuals in their shelters. We all have our own stuff; some of us have more than others. Some of us have far than others, and it could easily be argued that a few of us have way way way too much. Good show; check it out.
