Hosfelt Gallery: Christian Houge; Call of the Wild.

Call of the Wild artists: Joseph Beuys, Tim Hawkinson, Birgit Jensen, Michael Light, Patricia Piccinini, Alan Rath, Ed Ruscha, Kiki Smith, Helmut Wietz.

Review by RWM: Some of the meanest and most evil looking wolves you might ever see are on display. One can feel the menace in their eyes. They live at our graces mostly and play an important role in the environment, usually as predators, but this looks like a wolf eat wolf world. Some wolves are endangered species and here it seems like they are fighting back to protect themselves. Interesting symbolism and darkness of an unsafe world. Great show, but many will not want to run with them to howl at the moon.

Comment by AB: Norwegian photographer Christian Houge literally lived with a pack of wolves for months-- and judging from his photographs, it was scary but worth it. A group show in the front gallery is themed on the wild, but the wildest of it all has to be Patricia Piccinini's super creepy handmade mutant sculpture that looks so real, you're convinced that it actually existed.

Comment by AB: Contemplative figural works with abstract flourishes by Jaclyn Alderete range from disturbing to romantic. In the rear gallery, enjoy a group show of small-format riffs on the Mona Lisa.
