Rena Bransten Gallery: Kumie Tsuda - Sketch for Getting Used to New Things; Annie Han + Daniel Mihalyo (Lead Pencil Studio) - City Surface .

Comment by AB: In the front gallery, Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo (aka Lead Pencil Studio) construct plywood renditions of the appurtenances that we see on, around and near the outsides of buildings. Experiencing them all in such close proximity gives the impression of a densely packed industrial warehouse or workshop. In the rear gallery, Kumie Tsuda shows a body of work that represents her efforts at coming to grips with the social, cultural and geographical changes she encountered after moving from Japan to the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Stop on by.

Haines Gallery: Rob Craigie - The Expanding Color System.

Comment by AB: A wall of what appear to be Rorschach butterflies anchors this diverse exhibition by Rob Craigie. But when you look closer, you see that they're really abstract pattern paintings with a diversity of representational associations. Also on display is a sculptural beeswax archive from the early 1990s, video, photography, conceptual clipboard works, and a pseudo scientific installation in the back room. For a nightcap, Craigie orchestrates a scotch tasting, each brand presented in hand-painted bottles. Yummy. Stop on by.

Corden Potts Gallery: Jeri Eisenberg - A Sojourn in Seasons; Jacqueline Walters - Traces.

Comment by AB: Jeri Eisenberg expresses the soft sensitive side of the environment with her indistinct close-up impressions of plant life printed on . Jacqueline Walters reminds us of the romantic, contemplative and changeable nature of those special places where land meets sea.

Jack Fischer Gallery: Lauren DiCioccio - New Work.

Comment by AB: Lauren DiCioccio stitches up objects from everyday life like currency, notebooks, magazines, sheet music, an alarm clock, playing cards and more. Some artworks look so accurate you think they're mechanically produced, but nope. 100% manually executed. Here she expands her repertoire to some curious amoebic abstractions as well. Rounding the menu out are book pages with every letter of every word X'ed out according to a predetermined code where each letter in the alphabet corresponds to a particular color. Nicely done all the way around; see for yourself.
