Altman Siegel Gallery: Devin Leonardi - The Source is the Goal.

Comment by AB: According to the preamble, these little gem oil paintings on canvas by Devin Leonardi are based on 19th century photographs taken by notable artists of the time, the original images interpreted, reconfigured or combined in various ways. Is painting past its prime as an art form? Not if Leonardi has anything to say about it-- and he does. Recommended viewing.

Toomey Tourell Fine Art: Lyndi Sales - Apperception.

Comment by AB: Striking labyrinthine lattice-like cutouts by Lyndi Sales. According to Sales, "I generally interfere with the patterns I use -- this process is partly playful, but it also introduces a way for me to build a certain kind of entropy or chaos or tension into something that is stable like a given system or code. The work is a result of a wrestling process of perception ..." Of particular note are several works carved into Plexiglas Radiant, a plastic that continually changes color as you view it from various perspectives. Others are cut from watercolors on Fabriano paper. It's all good here. Go see.

Scott Nichols Gallery: Ansel Adams - The Manzanar Project.

Comment by AB: These historic photographs taken by Ansel Adams at the Manzanar Japanese internment camp during World War II recall America's most xenophobic days, and the ultimate in racial profiling. In some ways we've advanced far beyond this, but in others, we've barely made any headway at all. We can only hope that one day we'll judge people based on who they are rather than on how they look. Check it out.

Robert Tat Gallery: Steven Gelberg - Luminous Nudes.

Review by Lindsey Millikan: Black and white close-up photographs of the female form display evidence of a sophisticated eye for composition.

Comment by AB: Haunting and moody are descriptives that come to mind when viewing this 18-year survey of female nude photography by Steven Gelberg.
