Hashimoto Contemporary: Joel Daniel Phillips - I Am Another Yourself.

Review by RWM: Wonderful choices for portraits. Interesting subjects. Great to see them in real-life sizes. Lots of character caught in the details. These drawings bring a sense of nobility to the subjects, despite that they may be downtrodden. More sad and serious than fun.

Comment by AB: Heroic full-figure graphite drawings of people we should think a lot more about than we actually do. Many of us want to think about them so little, few of these impressive artworks will likely even sell. Why? Because who wants to be reminded of people we could care less about, right? These people we walk by every day and wish were gone, right? We're having too much fun dining at the trendiest restaurants, strolling about, texting our friends, and otherwise lavishing ourselves in our own little worlds, doing whatever we have to do to stay insulated from the sometimes harsh realities of others. These less-fortunates will gradually disappear, you think to yourself, as gentrification forces them out, and that can't come soon enough for many of us, can it? We'll finally be able walk the streets of what were once their neighborhoods and no longer have to see anyone who doesn't look or think or act like us. And there you have The New San Francisco.

Bash Contemporary: David Van Gough - Purgatorium.

Comment by AB: David Van Gough conjures up fabulously fantastic, elaborate, and at times grotesque and ghastly realities. Worth seeing.
