Comment by AB: Over 100 artists, many with more than respectable profiles here in the area, have contributed works for Root Division's annual art auction fundraiser to take place on October 24. Always an auction worth paying attention to.

[ 2nd floor projects ]: Jasmin Lim & Genevieve Quick - I Want to Step Across; Hyperborea or Bermuda Triangles I Have Known - Susan Gevirtz (limited edition chapbook).

Comment by AB: In the main gallery, ghostly deep-space dwellers painted and drawn in 3D by Genevieve Quick are paired with a two-screen video of their celestial context. Along the hallway, enjoy magical little mixed-media sculptures and photographs by Jasmin Lim-- neat, clean and inexplicably gratifying.

Needles & Pens: Treasury - Rachel E Foster. Curated by Amanda Roscoe Mayo.

Review by Quintessa Matranga: "Treasury" combines discovery with wonder to present an interactive installation that invites the spectator to take part in the exhibition. Raw wooden shelves line the gallery walls in order to support a neatly laid out collection of objects one might find at a thrift store or flea market, for example, an antique compass, an original nazi patch from WW II, a vintage tarot card, and more. By presenting a collection of relics, text, original works, and found art, the show turns the viewer into a detective.

You must decipher clues to come up with any conclusions about the artist's vision. The conceptual framework of the show is that it was assembled by the Chicago-based artist Rachel E. Foster and sent in one suitcase to the curator for arrangement in the space, thus bringing us back to Duchamp's Boîte-en-valise. "Duchamp's boxes address museums' ever-increasing traffic in reproductions and question the relative importance of the 'original' work of art" (quoted from the MoMA website). Treasury is on view at Needles & Pens until October 28th.

White Walls / Shooting Gallery: Casey Gray - Tropics; The Places We'll Go - Michael Page; 3am Femmes - Reka; A Well Marked Path - Lauren Napolitano.

Comment by AB: In the front gallery, Casey Gray takes us on an lively kaleidoscopic journey to balmy climes and vacation days along bright sunny beaches (like it). In the center gallery, Michael Page materializes fantastic rainbow realms populated by astonishingly inconceivable creatures. In the left project space, Lauren Napolitano conjures up an installation dense with hanging painted bottles, elaborate altars, found objects of all ilks and of course, her intricate black and white ink drawings. In the right project space, Reka concocts his creations from collaged shreds of black, white and red paper and flattened painted spray cans. Worth a visit.

San Francisco Art Exchange: Carinthia West - An Affectionate Archive.

Comment by AB: Photographs from the 1970s and 1980s by London model, actress and journalist Carinthia West show major stars in their youthful days and in remarkably relaxed, spontaneous, unguarded and casual circumstances. Subjects include Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood, George Harrison, Eric Idle, David Bowie, Angelica Huston, Robin Williams, Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt, Helen Mirren and more. Her Polaroids are especially tasty. Stop on by.
