Gallery Paule Anglim: Anne Appleby - The Blue Planet; Tomas Nakada - Sumi Ink Drawings.

Comment by AB: Encaustic diptychs by Anne Appleby pair land and sky, sky and sea. According to Appleby, "My paintings aren't about the other world. They're about our place in this world.  What nourished the soul is the experience of being in the body." Fair enough. In the anteroom, Tomas Nakada exhibits a series of ink drawings based on Okinawan textile patterns on found stationary from a Japanese hotel. Uh OK. The upside? It's good art.

San Francisco Museum of Craft + Design: Michael Peterson - Evolution/Revolution.

Comment by AB: Pacific Northwest artist Michael Peterson performs marvelous magic with wood. From what I can remember of our brief conversation, he hollows out solid blocks of wood with a chain saw (among other things) while they're still wet, somehow managing to keep the thin outer edges of the blocks intact, and then allows them to warp naturally as they dry. To top it all off, he burnishes the results to fine sheen patinas. They're so deceptive looking, at first I think they're sections of bent rusted metal ducts (it's hard to believe they're wood even once you know). For this travelling exhibition, he blends the hollowed out blocks with each other, and with other sculptural wooden wonders as well. Love it!

Fecal Face Dot Gallery: Mark Whiteley - Book release and photo show .

Review by Pilar Vree: Mark Whiteley, the editor of Slap magazine, offers photography that clearly raises the bar for street and skate imaging. With a keen eye for composition and a thrilling cast of subjects that include Raekwon, Tommy Guerrero and Barry Mc Gee, among others, this show is a pleasing documentation of modern city life. $175 per the each.
