Review by Maria Medua: The San Francisco Fall Antiques Show is an annual event that takes place at Festival Pavilion in Fort Mason Center. This year, the show features an exhibition entitled, "Sea Worthy - The Best of Nautical Art." As always, SF Fall Antiques includes premier antiques dealers from the United States and Europe. There is diverse material from periods spanning the 16th to the 20th Century.

The nautical theme brings out the best in the show's designers. They tap Obsolete Gallery of Venice Beach, CA (Booth 40) for a striking contemporary art installation by Ron Pippin. The piece consists of 120 reconstructed found model ships stacked on rough-hewn scaffolding illuminated with bare light bulbs.

The show has a reputation for setting trends. It was the first to include photography. The original form of this media which relied on emulsion film light sensitive paper, and chemistry, is fast becoming antique thanks to growth of digital technology.

Nicholas Brawer Gallery of New York (Booth 23) shows a collection of binoculars developed in 1936 for the Imperial Japanese Navy by a company that was the precursor to Nikon. The binoculars are so well made that the design remained in use until 1965.The restored pieces are examples of how collectible objects function as handmade works of art, as well as historical artifacts.

More Highlights: A mahogany side table in the shape of Cupid's bow once owned by Oprah Winfrey at Carlton Hobbes LLC (Booth 1); Helen Frankenthaler relief on handmade paper pieces at Meyerovich Gallery (Booth 59); A Lowell Nesbitt architectural painting en grisaille and an anonymous Trantra painting at Engs-Dimitri Works of Art (Booth 20); A page from a 16th Century book by a Master of Lubeck depicting four scenes from the life of Christ including the Entry into Jerusalem, Last Supper, Agony in the Garden, and his Betrayal and Arrest, at Les Enluminures (Booth 21).

Comment by AB: It's that time of year again (plus GO GIANTS & VAMANOS GIGANTES!!!). The San Francisco Fall Antiques Show, ensconced for the weekend here at Fort Mason Center's Festival Pavilion, offers all manner of lavishly extravagant trinkets, treasures, ornaments, rarities, doohickies, dealie-bobs, accessories, appurtenances and superfluities that you will not see anywhere else... guaranteed. Tonight's gala preview spectacular benefitting Enterprise for High School Students celebrates every last bit of it with one of San Francisco's most lavish and grand parties of the year.

Top international dealers from California, New York City, London, Milan, Miami, Philadelphia, Copenhagen, Paris, Ireland, Harrodsburg, KY and points beyond converge on the premises with the best in antique, period and vintage furnishings, lighting, silver, jewelry, sculpture, tapestries, carpets, paintings, books, curiosities, oddities, artifacts, a kinetic miniature cow, flags, bathing suits, signage, and way way more. My faves? Several forward-thinking Los Angeles galleries twist it up way beyond tradition, paving the acquisitory way with non-traditional collectibles that collectors who buy now will be glad they did later. The show runs through Sunday and is well worth the experience. Don't believe me? Check this out...
